The second aspect of the system is negatively charged ions, which are among the most important components of fresh, high quality air. These ions are so important for air quality that most natural places that we associate with fresh air simply have a very large proportion of these particles.

For instance, a high, mountainous area can have a negatively charged ion proportion of 6000 ions/cm3, and a forest a proportion of 1500 ions/cm3. On the other hand, closed spaces — where most of us spend the majority of our daily lives — have a proportion of nearly 0 ions/cm3.
